School Lunches: Think Outside the Bun!

By Korey Kealey August 27, 2015

It's that time of year when routines begin and meals planning is kicked into high gear.

Energy & focus levels need to be high at school and the best way to sustain both is with deeply nutritious yet satisfying foods that are all natural and low in sugar!

Bread is often the go to for sandwiches, wraps and paninis, but usually full of sugar, preservatives and few nutrients.

There are many ways to keep it interesting without the bun!

Toss:

Quinoa: the superhero of seeds, neutral in flavour and a complete protein:

Make a quinoa bowl by tossing favourite chopped veggies, cheeses and dressing in a resealable storage container.

Scoop:

Ham salad and egg salad are great with crackers! Look for hearty, all natural, low sodium, peanut free crackers like enerjive Quinoa crackers to scoop your way through lunch!

Divide:

Bento boxes: everyone loves compartments to carry favourite foods and keep the flavours from running together: make a balanced snack with hummus, veggies to dip and a nut free trail mix

Layer:

Yogurt Parfaits are simple and delicious...use plain Greek yogurt that you sweeten with either maple syrup or honey. Use ice packs in the lunch box.

Chill:

Thermos is your lunchtime friend: keep a stainless steel thermos in the freezer to keep smoothies cold and slushy until meal time.

Heat:

For piping hot foods: put boiling hot water in the thermos until you are ready to add  hot soup, stew or Chilli to the thermos.
