Using a Mac or PC in School - The Kid Weighs In

By Jonah, age 12 October 16, 2014

Oh my gosh I have a Mac! Pretty much everyone in my class has a Mac and now I joined the club.

Using the Mac in school is much different than using a PC. First of all, the Mac is much more intuitive and if you know how to fully use it you can do a lot of really cool stuff. If you’ve never worked on a Mac before it’s pretty easy to figure out. I spent one hour at the Apple Store meeting with one of the Apple guys and they showed me a bunch of stuff and within one hour I knew how to use most of the apps I needed for school, plus a bunch of other cool apps and features.

One of my favourite features is AirDrop which allows Mac users to send files to other Mac users. At school, I was working on a class project. One person was typing a script and they could send it to everyone in our group using AirDrop. He shared it with us within seconds and we all had a copy of the script. So cool!

Another really cool feature is VoiceOver. It allows you to type with your mouth. For example if you had a broken arm (like I do right now) and still needed to type something up on your computer, you can go onto VoiceOver and start speaking. It will then type what you say.

Pages, Keynote, and Numbers are like Word/Publisher, Powerpoint, and Excel on a PC except better. They are easier to use and also each have their own cool features within the program.

I’ve been back to school for six weeks and I use my Mac every day at school. I’ll be writing more soon to tell you about some of the other cool things about using a Mac. If you have questions for me, leave a comment below.
