Do you ever feel like your kids need more active things to do? Want them to have fun, move more and take a break from their devices?
This past weekend, our two junior reporters did just that, visiting OCR Academy Ottawa, a new place in town that is part gym, part Ninja-warrior course and part old-fashioned climbing, jumping, swinging fun.
Located near Lee Valley Tools just off the Queensway, this big, bright open space features ropes, rings, obstacle courses, activity courses, and lots of things to climb on, over, under and through including, a much more difficult than in looks vertical running wall.
Both kid reporters (age 12 and 16) are in good shape. One plays basketball and one plays soccer, but OCR gave them a hard workout. The course is tougher than it looks, and you work your core and your upper body strength with all that climbing, pulling, running and jumping. The day of our visit, there was a group of 14 year old boys visiting for a birthday party, a 5 year old girl and her mom visiting for the first time for the Open Gym session, and a 9 year old girl and her dad for on-site weekly workout.
OCR is really geared towards kids and families. Open gym times (where no classes are taking place) are scheduled daily. After-school programs include snack and homework time as well as a class workout and free time.
My kids both enjoyed the workout. "It allowed me to focus on something other than exams," said 16 year old Jonah. "It was a good workout and I really liked the different ways to exercise". Our 12 year old reporter Ben liked the challenge of the different obstacle courses and compared the courses to the tv show American Ninja Warrior. "It's exciting, challenging and fun," he said. "I like climbing up, over and through all the different things."
Birthday parties are available on weekends and krav maga and two other fit classes are available for kids starting at age 7. ObstacleFit Kids is a strength and conditioning program designed to teach the ObstacleFit children aged 7-13 years old through age appropriate instruction and cueing. In a group setting kids participate in fun and engaging workouts that deliver measurable results. All classes are mixed, but have a separate instructor for each age group: 7-9 years, and 10-13 years. *Kids 14 and older can join the Bootcamp. OFK workouts consist of constantly varied, functional that change each week. Personal training is also available.
On site staff were helpful, not only explaining how to use the equipment, but actually demonstrating how to use the equipment, spotting the kids and offering tips. They were attentive, encouraging and professional. The space includes a lounge area with lockers, places for coats and boots and two changing rooms, as well as a small area for beverages. Parents are welcome to work out with the kids or lounge and take a rest.
