Get Your Summer Read on at our Ottawa Public Libraries

June 13, 2019

Summer is almost here, school is almost out, and the summer reading fun is about to begin at Ottawa Public Library! All kids 12 years old and under can participate in the TD Summer Reading Club (TD SRC) – the 2019 edition. This summer, TD SRC invites children to explore the wonders of reading with this year’s vibrant theme: Natural World.

Starting today, Wednesday June 12, you can register your child for TD SRC in person by visiting your local OPL branch. Locally, between June 15 and 22, branches will be hosting official launch parties called “Get Your Summer Read On” to jumpstart the TD SRC celebrations.  Visit the OPL website to find out when your local branch will host their launch day filled with special activities. No worries though if your family cannot make it to a “Get Your Summer Read On” day as registration for TD SRC is possible anytime through the summer program until the programs ends Sunday, September 1, 2019

All kids participating in the club will receive a special notebook to track their reading progress, a web access code for the virtual club on the TD SRC website, stickers, and the chance to win prizes. Kids can participate in the TDSRC – for free – anytime, anywhere: at OPL, at home, online, on the road, wherever their summer takes them, or at any of the participating public libraries across Canada. Accessibility is key and OPL provides materials in alternative accessible formats, such as audio materials or Braille.

Throughout the summer, OPL branches across the city will offer programming featuring arts and crafts, dance, games, illusions, performing, science, music, stories, technology, and much more! Take a look at the full list of TD Summer Reading Club programs and events. Click on the branch, subject or language and find the perfect program of your choosing!

Why join the TD Summer Reading Club? For school-aged children, summer can mean regression in their reading skills. Active participation in the TD SRC helps reduce this “summer slide” by providing access to books and literacy-based programming while making reading fun! Last year, many parents with children who participated in the TD SRC said the program helped their children maintain their reading skills over the summer, and noticed a positive difference when their kids returned to school in the autumn!

Last year, more than 23,500 children registered for the TD Summer Reading Club at OPL and read more than 314,200 books.
