It's Science Literacy Week in Ottawa

This year, Science Literacy Week runs from September 16 to 22, 2019. Across Canada, libraries, universities, museums and other partners invite you to celebrate science by offering a diverse range of activities and programs. Ottawa Public library invites you to join the fun by taking part in one (or many) of our activities. This year’s Science Literacy Week is focused around the themes of science and ocean research.

We’ve got lots to offer the young scientists in your life!

Is computer science your thing? We’ve got coding workshops!

Code Your Game with Scratch, by the University of Ottawa’s Maker Mobile

Code Your Own Aquatic Adventures with Kids Code Jeunesse
A workshop based on Eric Carle’s book “A House for Hermit Crab”. Join them Saturday afternoon at Nepean Centrepointe and the following Thursday at Greenboro.

Virtual Ventures: Micro:bits
Tiny computers designed for beginners in electronics and coding. Learn the basics of coding to code games and robots.

Young scientists are invited to take part in a workshops led by Scientists in Schools. Please note: For the Scientists in Schools programs, each scientist (child) must be accompanied by a lab assistant (adult)

Science Literacy events for adults!
We’ve got a great line-up of science and ocean themed programs for Science Literacy Week:

Jurassic Trivia
Come test your knowledge on paleontology and dinosaurs in a fun and interactive 60 minutes game of that will challenge every dinosaur lover in Ottawa!
This will be hosted by Jordan Mallon, Paleobiologist, Research Scientist and Section Head from the Canadian Museum of Nature.

Science Fiction Book Group
Nepean Centrepointe branch, Monday, September 16, 7:30 pm
Discuss the book they are reading, “All Systems Red” by Martha Wells.

Check out the Science Exposed exhibit at the Main Branch from September 14 to September 20, 2019.

Explore science through Carleton University’s popular Science Cafés at the Sunnyside branch. Cafés are held twice a month during the fall and winter terms. Each café begins with a 20-minute talk by a scientist followed by a 40-minute open discussion period. Sunnyside branch also hosts Ingenious talks. In these talks, Faculty of Engineering & Design professors will be sharing their research with you. (Each session is a new and fascinating subject.) All are welcome!
