Summer for me means being by the water any chance I get, and we are lucky that Ottawa has so many waterfront access points. One of my favourite "little known" places to visit is Bate Island. If you want to explore someplace new this summer, consider checking it out.
Located along the Ottawa River, Bate Island is near the Champlain Bridge off Island Park Drive. This NCC-owned property is literally surrounded by water, making it a great spot to fish, kayak or watch the rapids. Mature trees offer lots of shade and there are many picnic tables, a gazebo-like structure, and lots of space to spread out. There is also lots of free parking.
Bate Island is a great spot for a picnic or other family outing, but you may have company. The island is home to lots of Canada geese so keep that in mind if you are not a fan of the fearless fowl.
Located right off the SJAM Parkway, you can take advantage of the bicycle friendly laneways and bike to Bate Island. This makes a great destination or local outing. Enjoy!
If you go:
- The use of small, self-contained barbecue units is generally acceptable.
- Dogs on a leash are permitted.
- Like most of the NCC’s spaces, Bate Island open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
