Helping Your Child Get Ready for Back to School

By Shayna Ghattas August 20, 2020

Set your children up for success by preparing them for school this Fall with the following tips!

Talk about school: Let your child feel the importance and excitement of this new beginning! Whether it’s entering Kindergarten or starting a new Grade, our children have been physically out of school since March and it’s important to address this significant transition. Taking your child to see their bus stop and following it’s route to school, or walking by the school to see the play area, are great ways to familiarize your child with their new surroundings.

Practice handwashing: Proper hand-hygiene techniques prevent the spread of infections. Teach effective hand hygiene using educational songs such as "Wash your hands, Brother John! (Tune of Frere Jacques)" (link courtesy Youtube/CHEO) to encourage 20 seconds of thorough cleansing of hands in a playful and fun way.

Practice independence:

  • backpack: fasteners, straps, and putting it on!
  • lunch containers: lifting off lids and closing securely (one messy backpack and you’ll see what we mean!)
  • shoes: putting on and fastening Velcro straps (laces only when independently capable)
  • jackets, rain coats: turning sleeves right side out, doing up zippers
  • masks, hand sanitizer: putting on, keeping safe by NOT touching face

Develop Toileting Routines: Although some classrooms have washrooms for Kindergarten-aged children, educators are unable to physically assist with toileting routines- though there is lots of coaching from the sidelines! Developing independence in this area is important!

Stay Positive: Remember that our kids are watching and listening to us, and that we help determine our child’s attitude during these uncertain times. Discuss your frustrations or fears away from your children. Practice social distancing protocols at home. Families will continue adapting and bending in impossible ways this Fall, but we can help create a positive learning experience and keep school a happy and safe place.
