OPL Creates Teen Staycation with Fun Summer Ideas for your Teen

June 24, 2021

Another strange year has passed and it’s time for the long, hot days of summer. The Ottawa Public Library (OPL) is hosting Teen Staycation, a summer-long series of programs and events designed for the 13 to 18 age group, led by our Teen Librarians. Staycation promises an interactive itinerary that will keep teens interested and engaged in exploring different ways to create, to share, to discuss, and to reflect in ways that will make the summer of 2021 fun and memorable. This summer, teens can jump into gaming adventures, enjoy crafty DIY projects posted weekly on our OPL YouTube channel, take on inventive sketching, writing, coding, cooking, and acting activities, as well as meeting up with other imaginative teens for a weekly book club and chats about great reads and recommendations.

OPL will be kicking off Staycation 2021 on June 29 at 4pm with an inspiring program and dance performance by Luca “Lazylegz” Patuelli. He will talk about how he overcame adversities by transforming negative situations in his life into positive ones. We also have special guests such as Brenda Chapman from Art-In-Jest who will introduce you to sketching for self-care; YA author Sarah Raughley who will host a writing workshop, and Tara Porter of Radical Eatery who will teach you how to make tasty, tantalizing food.

Here’s a few fantastic program highlights to whet your creative appetite:

On July 5, at 6:30 pm, Scratch workshop: Build a Maze Game

On July 6, at 4 pm, Cooking Class for Teens: Smoothies!

On July 12, at 2 pm, The Art of the Audition with a Company of Fools

·        On July 13, at 2 pm, Club de lecture pour ados (in French)

·        On July 14, at 2 pm, Writing With Raughley: A Workshop for Budding Young Authors

·        On July 15, at 4 pm, Dessin pour gérer ta santé: Le gribouillage et les super-pouvoirs du cerveau! (in French)

There are oodles of other programs planned too – keep checking the Library’s full  listing of programs and events on the OPL website.

Registration for July programs will begin on Wednesday, June 23 at 10 am. Participation is free. Every Staycation session is a singular event so teens can sign up for the online events that appeal to them. Capacity is limited for some activities.
