Summer Camp Spotlight: The Academy for Musical Theatre

May 13, 2023

The Academy for Musical Theatre, founded in 1998, provides high-quality instruction in music, acting, dance, and various aspects of technical theatre to youths of all ages, culminating in performances of large-scale Broadway productions!  The Academy is a very special and unique community of non-judgmental and spirited individuals with positive attitudes, devoted to providing a fun and safe environment for us to experiment artistically without fear of negative feedback. Our primary mandate is to build confidence.

The camp is recommended for ages 6 all the way through 20, depending on the program.

What an incredible lineup of shows being offered for the summer!

Ottawa:

July 24-28: Newsies

Stop the presses!

Disney’s Newsies Jr is the rousing tale of charismatic band of teenaged newspaper hawkers (“newsies”). When the titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsies’ expense, they rally others from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right!

July 31-August 4: Disney’s Alice in Wonderland

Curioser and Curioser!

Travel down the rabbit hole and join Alice, one of literature’s most beloved heroines, in her madcap adventures.  Featuring updated songs from Disney’s thrilling animated motion picture, Disney’s Alice in Wonderland JR. is a fast-paced take on the classic tale.

The ever-curious Alice’s journey begins innocently enough as she chases the White Rabbit.  Her adventures become increasingly more strange as she races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game!

Roles are plentiful, with dozens of wonderfully wacky characters, including rock lobsters, talking fish, royal cardspeople, unbirthday partiers, as well as a group of mean-girl flowers.  Many students will have the opportunity to play more than one role.  The Academy is also excited to feature absolutely epic costumes for this production – it’s going to be visually stunning!

July 31-August 11: West Side Story (2-week teen workshop)

“There’s a place for us”

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.

West Side Story features incredible songs such as “Tonight,” “America,” “Somewhere,” and “I Feel Pretty,” and many more.

The classic lives on in the film remake directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Ariana DeBose in her Oscar-winning performance!

August 14-18: Matilda

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other’s lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!

Packed with high-energy dance numbers, catchy songs and an unforgettable cast of star characters, with tons of awesome characters for everyone to play, Matilda is a joyous and powerful romp.

Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to join us in one of the most fantastic shows ever written!
